About Us

Mission

Free Prisoners of Conscience is a platform founded by a group of journalists, businessmen, civil society representatives, and activists to be a voice for all prisoners of conscience in Turkey. We are committed to raising awareness on human rights violations, social and legal injustices, supporting initiatives and grassroots organizations with an ultimate goal to free prisoners of conscience in the country.

Vision

Free Prisoners of Conscience envisions a peaceful society that promotes and protects democratic values, rule of law, and fundamental human rights for all people from diverse religious, ethnic, cultural, and political backgrounds. We reiterate the principle of presumption of innocence that a person is considered innocent unless proven guilty.

Freedom on the Ride Campaign

Free Prisoners of Conscience advocates hit the road in New York and Washington DC to demand Turkey free more than 30 thousand prisoners of conscience arrested on bogus charges. Around a hundred cars and trucks joined us in raising our voice for Turkey's innocent, in both cities.

We're all in prison until they all are free, Free prisoners of conscience in Turkey!

Fallen Prisoners of Conscience

Exhibition

The post-coup crackdown in Turkey has produced thousands of victims, resulting in an across-the-board iron fist against dissidents of all kinds in the country. More than 170,000 people have lost their jobs. Some 160,000 have passed through police custody while 90,000 have been remanded in pre-trial detention. At least 58 individuals, among which were teachers, homemakers, police officers, prosecutors, have been found dead in Turkish prisons since July 15, 2016.

If you want to join us in paying tribute to the memories of those who lost their lives to this massive crackdown, exhibit the stories of the deceased prisoners of conscience in Turkey in your town.

Outdoor Campaigns

Gokhan Acikkollu, a high-school teacher suffering from diabetes, died of torture in police custody as part of the massive post-coup persecution. The 42-year-old teacher spent 13 days under custody before he was found dead in his cell on August 5, 2016. We did this and this and that to raise awareness about Gokhan's case and the wide-spread torture against prisoners of conscience in Turkey.
Furkan Dizdar, a 12 year-old cancer patient, died several months after Turkish border agents seized his and his parents’ passports at İstanbul Atatürk Airport as part of the persecution, causing the family to abandon their plans to receive cancer treatment in Cuba. The family’s passports were seized at the border because of alleged links to Hizmet Movement. We did this and this to spread Furkan's story and the persecution in Turkey.
